Really need to keep on top of this thing and up to date this year. Should really actually do things so that I have some sort of content as well
I thought I would start off a little differently this tim and post something constructive for the DJs on the interwebz. I’ve spent the last couple of months getting to grips with various promo mailing lists and I thought I would share them with you. I always used to hear of DJs getting promos and being on mailing lists but finding out where they are and how to get on them was harder than I expected. Hopefully the links below will make that task a little easier. A couple of disclaimers first though..
- Most of them are not free. You’ll have to pay anywhere from £10-40 a month to be on the list. When you start getting the stuff sent to you you’ll realise they’re sending you a lot more music for your money than you would get on ITunes or Beatport.
- You will need to provide reactions to the tracks they send you in order to download them… if you don’t think you’ll have the time then I wouldn’t sign up. You also might need to provide a weekly/monthly chart.
- You WILL be sent lots of shite music.
If you can handle all of the above then you’re just a signup form away from the smugness of having tracks before the general public.
http://www.djcity.com/ – Latest addtion to promo provider (and by that I mean today). They followed me on twitter, I looked at their site and the rest is history. Big selection of releases every day it seems. and from big artists too.
http://www.music-house.co.uk/ – Music house is a family of promo lists which do a variety of genres. I’m currently on the Euro-Solution which caters for the commercial chart side of things. They dish out some of the biggest releases for the UK market. Great example would be Cheryl Cole’s new single Call My Name. First ever play on Radio was at 8:10 this morning, it was on my promo list by lunchtime. It isn’t out until the second week in June. You need to provide these guys with a chart every week though, so make sure you got the time.
http://www.zipdj.com – American based promo service which can be quite handy. Sometimes things get big in the states before they hit our shores and having an overseas promo service can help you get the tracks earlier. They also get different remix packages on some of the bigger releases so you can stay one step ahead of the game by getting involved in that too
I’ve also got to give a special mention to www.maquinamusic.com & www.threesixtyuk.net for basically letting me on their promo list for tweeting once about really liking a ThreeSixty track and that I was playing it all the time. Although I doubt any of their tracks will ever get to number one I get plenty of stuff sent though that I can use in house sets or that I personally like.
There you have it, a terrible guide on promo lists
